WritePass Recommends: 5 amazing tools to improve your studies

| January 11, 2017

It has never been such a great time to be a student! With the wide array of websites, apps and tools available at your disposal (most of them free!), it means that students can spend more time on researching and developing their essays, rather than spending hours ensuring they have a comma in the right place in their references!

Today we take a look at 5 of our favourite tools to make studying and revision simpler and easier.

If you have to give a lot of presentations, then you know how effective good visuals can be at getting your message across. Infographics are great ways to combine visual elements with text or statistical information – however unless you’re a wizard at graphic design, they can be a daunting thing to attempt. But no-longer! Canva is a great new website that is suitable for all manner of design tasks and offers a vast library of images, icons, fonts and features to choose from.  It features a dedicated infographic maker that you can use for free, with hundreds of free design elements and fonts at your fingertips! Check Out Canva

Sometimes taking useful notes in class, to later use for revision or writing, can be more challenging than it seems. Not only can it be easy to miss an important bit of information, but with your lecturer moving on at a quick rate, you can lose track of what was said, or the context of what was being said.  In the past, some students would learn shorthand to try and record all the information – fortunately with modern technologies, this no-longer has to be a problem; SoundNote allows you to take notes during lectures while also recording the audio from the lecture! This app is the best way to take notes in meetings, lectures, and interviews. It tracks what you type and draw while recording audio, so you’ll never worry about missing an important detail. But what if your lecture has a slide or a presentation that you want to make a note of, and you dont have enough time? Sometimes you don’t have the time to sit and copy out an entire whiteboard or powerpoint slide. Fortunately Office Lens is an amazing little app allows users to photograph a whiteboard, poster or any text and then convert it to a PDF, Word or PowerPoint file. This can make copying up notes for revision so much easier! When combined with SoundNote, you should be able to effectively capture all the important notes from your classes. Check out Office Lens

One of the biggest areas of weakness for students is referencing. Either they don’t do enough of it, or they do it incorrectly. With so many different types of referencing formatting – from Harvard to OSCOLA – it is not surprising that this is an area that many students feel weak on. That is why CiteThisForMe was launched; CiteThisForMe is a completely FREE citation website for students that automatically formats your bibliographies and reference lists correctly using the APA, MLA, Chicago, or Harvard referencing styles. Simply visit the website, create a new bibliography, choose your referencing style, and then add all your texts to the list as you compile your references list. It’s awesome! wCheck out CiteThisForMe
