Dissertation Topics on Oil and Gas Health and Safety

| October 24, 2012 | 2 Comments

The following topics are suggestions for students looking to write specifically about Health and Safety in the Oil and Gas industry. If you’re interested in Oil and Gas management in general, then you’d be interested in reading Oil and Gas Management Dissertation Topics.

1. How has oil and gas regulation evolved to account for the growing concern over health and safety standards in the industry?

  • This topic will look at the legislative requirements for compliance with certain health and safety standards in the oil and gas sector e.g. the Health & Safety at Work Act, Safety Case Regulations
  • Since most oil and gas extraction happens in foreign countries or offshore, it may be relevant to consider issues of application of these regulations in MNEs that operate outside the territory of UK application.

2. Consider the impact of the evolution of Corporate Social Responsibility to include considerations over health and safety in the oil & gas sector in developing countries.

  • CSR includes concerns over employee health and safety, but also concerns over broader social health and safety (such as that of the surrounding community).
  • This topic will look at the international mandate on companies in developing countries undertaking oil and gas operations, to consider these issues of health and safety in their operations.
  • The topic may consider both internal H & S, or external, or both.
  • In considering external h&s concerns, it will be necessary to factor in the fact that this relates directly to environmental standards also. Therefore it may be useful to define the parameters of this topic carefully so as to not leave the question open ended or overly broad.

3. Explore the health and safety compliance strategies that are necessary in offshore oil and gas operations.

  • This topic explores the strategies that are used by companies in implementing health and safety compliance management and strategies within the operations of these companies themselves.
  • This topic may also explore the different elements of health and safety in an oil and gas operation generally.

4. Health and Safety Compliance: A case study of the Royal Dutch Shell Group (i.e. Shell)

  • Considering that Shell is one of the largest oil and gas companies in the world, consider how this company incorporates health and safety standards into their operations both internationally and offshore.
  • This should be a comprehensive case study of the extent to which the company undertakes this compliance for the sake of legislation, versus a larger societal commitment.

5. Discuss the current challenges facing h & s in the oil and gas sector.

  • Consider cross-cultural differences in attitudes, perceptions and beliefs regarding health and safety as they range between countries, international regulatory bodies, companies, regions and continents.
  • Considering this range of opinions, what challenges do these present for the oil and gas sector and how would these companies or organizations face these challenges.
