How to Advance your Career through your Dissertation

| May 31, 2012 | 0 Comments

Let’s face it; one of the main goals of a post-graduate student is to get a good job after completing their dissertation. You might want a career in academia, in which case you will have to prove yourself with this research so that you can progress to the PhD and become an assistant to a professor or a lecturing assistant and so on. The pay isn’t great, but it is rewarding if you want to pursue a career which is one of research and teaching.

If this is your goal then you have to spend a lot of time and thought on your dissertation to make it the best that it can possibly be and one of the most interesting and intriguing that your tutor has read in some time. It will have to end with ideas for future research which are interesting to pursue.

If you want a career in industry, for example, then you might have to look no further than the company in which you did the research for your dissertation. If you have made a favourable impression and your work has been instrumental in helping that company make some improvements, then you are in with a good chance of getting a job there when your dissertation is finally finished.

If this is the case then you should always look presentable when you are in the company and conduct yourself in a professional manner. Do not get overly friendly with anyone in that company as you will need to show that you are a competent and impartial researcher. You goal is to impress the bosses, not the general staff. Never be late for appointments, and if you are unavoidably detained then call ahead to explain why you cannot be at the appointment or why you will be late. Mobile phones are very useful, as long as you are not stuck in a tunnel using British Rail. Always give yourself time to get to the workplace at the appointed time and allow for any delays. It’s better to be early and stop for a coffee somewhere than to be late.

If you behave in a professional manner at all times and are courteous and eager to learn and help the boss in any way that does not compromise the quality of your research data, this will be noted. Don’t turn up in ripped clothing or with a hangover- these things will also be noted.

So think about your future career when you choose where you will do the research for your dissertation. It could really be a huge stepping stone to the enhancement of your career.
