How to Prepare for an Interview

| October 9, 2011 | 1 Comment

After submitting the perfect CV to a potential employer, the waiting game begins. If you are contacted and invited to interview, you know you have already made it over the first hurdle. To get the job however, you will need to impress and convince your interview panel.

Research

One of the biggest mistakes you can make going into an interview, is knowing nothing about the company to whom you have applied.  Do your research and be prepared to impress your interviewer with your knowledge of the company.

Practice

Get a friend or family member to help you practice being interviewed. Create a list of questions that you think you may be asked. The more questions you can come up with ahead of time, the better prepared you will be. Ask your helper to randomly select questions, and maybe come up with a few of their own, to keep you on your toes.

Plan a Route

Arriving late for an interview is never a good idea. It can lose you the job before you even get there. Plan your route and even practice it a day or two ahead of time if you can, so that you can be absolutely sure you know how long it will take. When you know the time frame, allow for unexpected traffic or other situations by leaving earlier than you need to.

Create a Look

Your image is one of the first impressions you will make at an interview. Dress well, but also appropriately for the job you are seeking. Plan an outfit a few days ahead of time and make sure the clothes are clean and pressed.

A good interview is essential for getting a job, and it can be very stressful precisely because so much is at stake. Remember though, you can give yourself the greatest possible chance of success by taking the time to prepare thoroughly and looking good on the day.
