5 Tips for Student Survival – I hate Uni

| October 15, 2011 | 5 Comments

Starting life as a student, especially if you’re living away from home for the first time, is exciting, but it can also be a stressful time as you get to grips with meeting new people and settling down in different surroundings. Here are five top tips to help you survive your first few weeks.

Look After Your Money

Resist the urge to buy that expensive new sound system or other electronic goodies as soon as you get your student loan. Remember that you have to eat and pay rent as well! Plan ahead and give yourself a budget, allowing for travel where necessary and nights out. It may sound boring, but come the end of term you’ll be glad you did it.

Get to Know People

Be as sociable as you can in the early days. Everyone’s in the same boat so seek out new friends. If you’re living in halls, it’s easy to get to know people quickly, and then there are all the new faces on your course where you’ve already got a shared interest in common. Friends made at university or college often remain friends for life.

Join a Society or Club

Meet up with like-minded students by signing up for an activity that interests you. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to it, you’ll find plenty of encouragement whether it’s sports, music or something else. It also gives you the chance to let off steam outside of your academic work.

And Talking About Work…

Don’t leave everything until the last minute, whether it’s coursework or exam revision. Try to plan your assignments and avoid the stress of cramming or writing an essay in a panic.

Enjoy Yourself

Have fun while you’re a student. It’s a great experience, so grab this bit of your life with both hands and have a fantastic time.
