Cheap Ways to Contact Home When you are a Student From Overseas

| October 16, 2011 | 2 Comments

Staying in touch with family and friends when you are a long way from home is as important as getting to know all the new people you meet when you start your student life. The speedy rise of social networking and communication through the internet has transformed the way you can keep in contact with loved ones, even if they are on the other side of the world.

The cheapest way to contact home is by using the Skype application that can be downloaded to your computer. This allows you to make either free or very cheap calls to anyone in the world. The free calls only work through the computer, so your family or friends will have to have easy access to one and also ensure that the application is downloaded at their end. An added attraction when using this method is that you can see the person you are talking to on your computer and they can see you.

If the person you want to contact doesn’t have a computer, you can still use the application to make cheap calls to landline or mobiles either by taking out a monthly subscription or by pay-as-you-go.

Many companies offer ways to make cheap international calls and these are easy to find on the internet. These usually work by giving a local number access to dial and then inputting the international code and number you want to call. Competition is fierce amongst phone call providers, and there are options to pay as you go or to take out a subscription. The important thing to consider, if you have to pay for your calls, is how often you are likely to use the service and how long you expect an average call to be. Units are generally charged per minute and there are all sorts of deals available.
